Title: 2-D Euclidean Shapes 881: Mexican Motif # ES_881_LP

Random Circles

Shark Attack

Title: Random Circles 31 on the Cartesian Plane # RC_31_MP

(Please click here to enlarge)

Description: The artwork is based on a discrete uniform distribution and displays circles with randomized sizes and randomized positions on the Cartesian plane. The style of the painting parallels the style of the Dutch artist Pieter Mondrian, but the design is based on mathematics.

Specifications: 18 in by 24 in by 3/4 in (47.5 cm by 61 cm by 1.9 cm) giclee print on archival-quality gallery wrapped canvas (unframed).

Math: The notion of randomness is not new. In antiquity, the Chinese (c. 3000 BC) and the Greeks recognized randomness. And, in 1888, John Venn, an English logician, addressed the topic in his book The Logic of Chance.

A discrete uniform distribution is a distribution in which a finite number of outcomes are equally likely to happen. The probability of happening is P(X)=1/n, where n is a finite number of outcomes.
